M.G. Ramachandran, who loved the freedom of Tamileelam to the end

M.G. Ramachandran, who loved the freedom of Tamileelam to the end
Birthday today 17 January 1917
Marudhur Gopalan Ramachandran
Nawalapitiya
Kandy District, Central Province

Born in Kandy, Sri Lanka, M.G.R. showed a lot of interest and activities in Tamileelam. Unexpectedly, the relationship between M.G.R. and the freedom movement blossomed. M.G.R. was impressed by the leadership and bravery of national leader Prabhakaran. It eventually turned into friendship. MGR openly supported Eelam when he was the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and gave Rs. 7 crore of his own money to the world without worrying about any pressure to buy the necessary weapons for the LTTE to win.

When the Eelam struggle intensified in the 1980s, he supported it and wanted a separate nation for the Tamils under the leadership of the LTTE leader Prabhakaran. He openly supported the LTTE and bought weapons and took them to Sri Lanka to save the Tamil people.

The national leader said in an interview that without that help, the movement would not have grown to this extent. He also said that he called MGR his brother. He told Prabhakaran about his situation by giving a large amount of help even during the time when the central government was pressuring the LTTE and that he had nothing to do with the actions taken by the central government. Even a week before his death, there are reports that he had given Rs. 40 lakh to the LTTE.

At that time, the Indian Peace Keeping Force was stationed in northern Sri Lanka. They said that the Indian army was killing the Tamils, and you should intervene and stop the war. On that basis, MGR met Rajiv Gandhi in person and urged him to cease the war. Not only did he provide financial assistance for the establishment of an independent Tamileelam, but he also established a separate hospital in Madurai for the LTTE wounded in the war and provided medical treatment.

There is no one who helped the Tamils of Eelam like MGR. If he had lived for another 10 years, the Tamils of Eelam would have got a separate country. It is a historical tragedy that did not happen. Even when he was on the verge of death, he tried to protect the Tamils of Eelam and the LTTE.

But his health condition did not cooperate. MGR’s death, which shook Tamils living all over the world, also shook the LTTE movement.

In his condolence message on the demise of MGR, Prabhakaran said, “The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam pay their tearful homage to the Honorable Chief Minister MGR, who wanted the people of Tamileelam to live freely.”

Although he has passed away, he remains a God in the hearts of the people.
