In the memory of the freedom fighter and singer Major Siddu

In the memory of the freedom fighter and singer Major Siddu

Major Siddu holds a unique place for himself among the Eelam struggle singers. His heroic death in the field as a fighter was a loss to the art world. His life was forever etched in the minds of the people.

Siddu entered the music world by singing the lyrics of a fighter named Major Sengathir in the early 90s. The song that introduced and launched the great fighter artist was “Kannireeril Kaaviyangal Senneeril Oviyangal”. Another Eelam singer, Santhan, was famous at the time of Siddu´s entry.

Later, when songs sung in memory of Colonel Kittu were released, Siddu reached the pinnacle of fame. The song “Kadalamma..”, which was hastily composed and released within two days, became very popular. After that, Siddu has got a place that will never be removed.

Siddu was doing his duty as a fighter. He has done many duties starting from the Cultural Affairs Department.

A film produced by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam is ‘Uyirpoo’. There is a song sung by Siddu in the film. The song that will captivate anyone once you hear it. “Chinna Chinna Kannil Vadhu Minnal Rakkudam” will always be the first among Siddu´s famous songs.

It was the last song he sang. He has sung about 75 songs, including the song ‘Siragu Mulaithu Vadatti Mokhip Parakum Kuruvigal’, which was included in the album of the children of the desert.

A band consisting of freedom fighter artists called the Tamileelam Band would play liberation songs for the people. Many people would gather. If Siddu was there, this musical event was very well received. After the heroic death of Siddu, people stopped going to music concerts.

That was the time when stage theatres began to fall into disuse. The time when street drama called ‘Therukkuthu’ was widely used to convey messages to the people. When street dramas flourished in the Vanni with great vigor, orchestras or large stage events were avoided. Street drama was the primary art and propaganda medium in the Vanni until the launch of “Oyaatha Alaigal-3.

The loss of Siddu was felt as a great loss among the people. People were even talking about why Siddu had gone to fight.

On 01.08.1997, the LTTE launched a powerful attack on the Sinhala forces that had advanced through “Operation Jayasikkuru” and were stationed in Omanthai. The operation did not turn out as successful as expected. It was in Achamar that our beloved singer Major Siddu became maveeran.

Everyone generally has the adage “Sokappattukkhu Siddu”/ ”Sad song by Siddu”. Most of the songs he sang were like that. He has sung many memorial songs for the Karumpulikal.

Maveeran Siddu, who sang more than seventy songs in the Tamileelam uprising, became maveeran in the attack on the Omanthai army camp on 01.08.1997.

All the songs he sang were wonderful. The song “Chinna Chinna Kannil” sung by him in the movie “Uyirpoo” melted everyone. Rather than listening to the song alone, watching it with the movie can give you the full experience of the song.

In the movie, the eldest son (Nakulan) is chased out of the house by his father for breaking a village girl’s water jug as a game. The younger brother, who has immense affection for him, is lost in thought. This is a song in which the eldest son (Nakulan) thinks of his younger brother from a pond.

Siddu’s voice melodiously melds. The acting of both Nakulan and the younger brother, who have transformed into that character, further enhances the song. I want to tell you a little about that Nakulan.

According to the story of the film, Nakulan is the eldest son who roams around without any responsibility. At one point, he realizes and goes into fishing. He sacrifices his younger brother to the gunshot of the Sinhala navy. The next day, he sacrifices his father in front of his eyes in the same way. Then, joining the liberation struggle, at one point, he becomes a Karumpuli and destroys the enemy ship.

This is the basic story. In this, Nakulan is a freedom fighter. The next day, the incident happened exactly as it happened in the film. Yes, the same Nakulan who finally played the role of a Karumpuli destroying an enemy ship in the film ‘Uyirpoo’, attacked and sank an enemy gunboat in the Pulmottai sea area and died a heroic death as the sea tiger Major Nakulan.

Major Siddu, Major Madhavan (and many others) who sang as war heroes fought and died a heroic death on the battlefield. Nakulan did not remain an actor. Similarly, Kuttikannan became a symbol of bravery and became the guardian of the Tamil nation and shined.

Even if you disappear, we will not forget your memories…
