Heroic historical memories of Maveeran Kirishanth (Kalkath)

Maveeran Krishanth (Kalkath)
Markandu Madanarupan
Puttur East, Yarlpanam
Birth: 25.08.1976
Death: 16.09.1991

Event: Became maveeran in the battle with Sri Lankan forces in Manalaru.

Kalkath is one of the more than two hundred maveeran who died in the historic battle in Manalaru last year. Many fighters call him Kirishanth rather than Kalkath. Because it was under the name Kirishanth that he was first introduced to the movement.

Kirishanth fully joined our movement in 1990. He is the eldest son of Markandu and Ravindra Devi, a resident of Vignesvara Road, Puttur East, Yarlpanam. His real name is Madanarupan. He is called Palam at home. He has two younger sisters and a younger brother. Kirishanth is a student of Yarlpanam Central College. He left school midway during his schooling and joined the field considering the need of the time. He is the eldest son at home. He grew up under the strict control of his parents. He does not know the outside world well. He is young. Mischief was seen in him a lot. Even a few days before joining the movement, his younger brother’s hand was broken due to his mischief. But this incident paved the way for Kirishanth to control his mischief. However, it did not completely decrease until the end.

Kirishanth is young. But his contribution to the struggle is great. Medicine is essential and very important during the fight. This is the medical service that Kirishanth provided. His contribution did not stop with medical work alone. He also participated in some attacks against the Sri Lankan army. It is especially noteworthy that his hands were armed with guns in the historical battle of Aanayiravu.

Along with this, his artistic talent was natural to him. He did not study music. However, his voice is sweet. Sometimes, at the request of his friends, he would sing some songs. Then we would forget ourselves. He was also good at drawing pictures. He has drawn the names of some heroes in the forest with marble. If you look at its detail and beauty, you can clearly see his artistic talent. If he sees a picture, he will just scratch it. He is never idle. He is always drawing something when he is not working. It seems that natural scenes captivate his mind.
Almost all the pictures he draws are natural scenes. Even if he writes his name, he will draw pictures of flowers and decorate it. He is also good at making handicrafts. He takes saline tube, saline wire, etc. that we use and waste and makes fish, flowers, birds and other things very beautifully and delicately.

But he has a habit, no matter who it is, if he makes a mistake, he will openly tell or ask him directly. He does not have the habit of keeping anything in mind. This has even made him angry with some people. Despite everything, he was very compassionate. He was also firm in his ideals.

Even after joining the movement, Kirishanth was somewhat mischievous. But he was very much bound by the rules of our movement. Once in the month of November in 1990, he threw his new toothbrush in the mud in response to a challenge from a friend. As punishment for this, he had to tie the toothbrush to a thallus and wear it around his neck.

Later, on the day of Thai Pongal in 1991, the toothbrush was taken off his neck. Kirishanth was firm in his ideals and completed his training. After a few months he studied medicine in the medical unit of the LTTE in Manalaru district. Later, he served as a doctor in some camps and in some battles. He also went to the attack unit of the LTTE. Later, he came back to Manalaru and continued his medical work. From the time he joined our movement in 1990, until his final days, Kirishanth spent only three hours in Yarlpanam. That was when he brought an injured fighter to the Yarlpanam hospital. The rest of his fighting life was spent in the Manalaru forest.

He had one wish until the end. He wanted to see the land where he was born and raised and his relatives at least once. To express this, he would sing a song, ‘If you say Yarlpanam, honey will taste sweet” but Kirishanth’s ambition did not waver. He was enthusiastic and worked hard to win Tamileelam.

It was only when Kirishanth was standing on the field in the final stages that he saw some of his relatives. Those relatives were from the Charles Anthony Special Force of our organization. Through them, he even received a letter from home. It said: “We will not be an obstacle to your ideal path in any way. But please come and see us at least once. It has been two years since you left us. We are very eager to see you.” However, Kalkath, who was standing on the field, did not lose heart. He became even stronger in his idealism.

He immediately told the relative who gave him the letter. ‘If you get a chance to see my mother, please tell, I am standing in Manalaru. Tell, that if I am alive after the war, I will definitely come and see her.” This incident took place on the battlefield amidst the fierce bombing of fighter planes, massive cell attacks, and the gunfire coming from the enemy.

Kirishanth continues to do his job with determination. He brought the seriously injured fighters lying on the battlefield and gave medical treatment, saving the lives of many fighters.

He carried even the wounded fighters who were older and taller than him on his small shoulders and provided first aid. When he lifted the wounded fighters lying on the battlefield, he would not let go of their weapons. He would take out those weapons and operate them, leaving the enemy stunned for a few moments. Acting with speed and courage on the battlefield. It was while Kirisanth was carrying a wounded fighter to the front line and administering first aid that an enemy shell struck Kirishanth´s face.

He fell. The blood that turned his green clothes red. We tried to give him medical treatment and were disappointed. He died a heroic death.
