Memorial Day of Lt. Col. Chetti On September 20, 2000
This marks the Memorial Day of the martyrdom of Lt. Col. Chetti, from the intelligence wing. While conducting reconnaissance for the attack on the Katunayake Air Base, he managed to escape an attempt by Sri Lankan forces to capture him. He leapt into the oven of a nearby bakery, taking his own life in the process.
For his routine operations, he had been using a vehicle obtained from a Tamil-speaking individual in Negombo. Sri Lankan intelligence, having picked up the trail, lay in wait inside the vehicle on September 20, 2000. When Lt. Col. Chetti boarded the vehicle, they attempted to arrest him. However, he managed to break free from their grasp, sprinted to a nearby bakery, and threw himself into the oven, ending his life to avoid capture.
It was precisely because he chose to sacrifice himself rather than be captured by the enemy. That information regarding the planned attack on the Katunayake Air Base remained concealed. The LTTE successfully executed the attack, inflicting massive destruction upon the Sri Lanka Air Force.
Let us hold in our hearts the memory of this heroic warrior who sacrificed his life for the liberation of the Tamileelam homeland.
