Weeratunga’s army went on a rampage in Yarlpanam. It unleashed terror on an unprecedented scale. Hundreds of Tamil youth were arrested and detained. They were brutally tortured in prisons. Many were tortured and murdered in army camps and police stations. Their mutilated bodies were thrown on the streets. Military terrorism was unleashed on the people of the Yarlpanam peninsula.
As a result of Weeratunga’s six-month tyrannical rule, a large number of Tamil youth rallied behind the LTTE movement. The vast Tamil population willingly supported the LTTE’s armed struggle.
A high-profile armed struggle
The decade of the seventies brought the Sinhala-Tamil national conflict to an unprecedented maturity. The intense pressure of state repression unleashed a wave of political violence in Tamileelam. The conditions that arose from this political violence gave rise to a strong anti-armed movement. As state repression intensified, so did the anti-armed movement. As the armed struggle under Prabhakaran grew and expanded, moderate parliamentary politics became dysfunctional. This decade elevated the political struggle of the Tamils to an armed struggle and revealed the historical need to establish a separate state of Tamileelam by establishing the right to self-determination.
