Palai is the main town of the Pachchilaipalli Divisional Secretariat under the Kilinochchi District in the North of Eelam. Palai is also a big town.

Periya Palai, Allippalai, Buloppalai, Thambagamam, Vannangeni, Mullaiyadi, Kachcharaveli, Arasar Keni, Senthilnagar, Iththaavil, Vembodugeni, Dharmangeni, Soranpatru, Masar are towns inside Palai. Palai sees as a central city for all these towns. Many public administration offices are located around Pallai.

Palai Stores and the main shopping malls are located near the town of Palai.

Palai means old. The name of this old place is ancient. It is possible that the old town will have come to be known as Palai after where people lived continuously.

Palm and coconut grows very well here in Palai. Palai is also a major contributor to the economic development of Eelam as a plantation industry.

During the final phase of the Eelam war, in the year 2006, Palai gave a major help to Muhamalai that served as a military base for base operations to defend the front line.

Palai territory was the backbone of the undefeated Muhamalai front. Palai lights up again after having been through many destructions and displacements.
