09.01.1997 – The successful attack on the Paranthan Aanayiravu military camp

The defense of the Aanayiravu military zone was essential to sustain the Chandrika government’s occupation of Yarlpanam. It was the heart of Sri Lanka’s war strategy. The Sinhalese, who had turned the neck-like Aanayiravu, which had the only land route connecting Yarlpanam to the mainland, into a military base, turned it into a large military zone after the occupation of Yarlpanam.

The military zone, which spread across Kilinochchi, Paranthan, and Aanayiravu and included tens of thousands of soldiers, had Yarlpanam as its rearguard.

It gained further importance in 1997. With the areas captured through Operation Satjaya, the Sinhalese army prepared for a massive offensive with Aanayiravu as its operational base to further expand the military zone and open the land route to the Yarlpanam Peninsula. The lead forces were concentrated and a large amount of high-powered conventional weapons and equipment required for the advance was accumulated, while Aanayiravu waited the final order of the military leadership.

In this situation, our national leader, who implements decisions that surprise everyone according to the field situation in the battlefield, decided to launch a surprise offensive on the Aanayiravu-Paranthan joint base. He had drawn up an offensive plan that included the elements of carrying out a series of operations according to the field situation, while also carefully adjusting the battle arrangements of the Sinhalese forces.

The most important battle in the list of combat achievements of the LTTE is the breakthrough battle against the Aanayiravu-Paranthan military bases. By penetrating to the heart of the base, taking control of its lifeline infantry bases and brigade headquarters, using them to launch an attack on the enemy from the enemy’s infantry positions, and ultimately destroying large ammunition depots and nine infantry positions, this breakthrough battle contains the heroic events of our troops in the heart of the enemy.

It is noteworthy that at the end of the battle, two 120mm artillery pieces were recovered from there.

The enemy’s military base, which had been bustling with war preparations, froze in silence. The enemy abandoned his invasion plan from Aanayiravu. Commander Brigadier Balraj had led this victorious battle.

In this battle, 103 freedom fighters sacrificed their lives to secure victory.
