Prabhakaran unconditionally released the SL soldier so that the chastity of a Sinhala woman would not be harmed.
High customs like bravery, love, and character are unique to our Tamils. We can see humanity that is not found in any military organization or police force in the world only in the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.
A Sinhalese soldier who had come to the war a few months after his marriage was captured by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. When the arrested soldier had been in the LTTE’s prison for a few years, he wrote a letter to the national leader of the movement requesting to meet his young wife. The letter went to the national leader.
The national leader gave permission for it. On a certain day, the wife of the Sinhalese soldier came from Anurathapuram to Kilinochchi. She met and talked to her husband, and the two talked about family matters until the evening. In the evening, the LTTE took the woman to the railway station going to Anurathapuram.
But for some reason, the train did not arrive that day. What should we do? Where should we accommodate a woman, especially the wife of a Sinhalese soldier? The officers were confused. The information went to the leadership, and the national leader said that the woman should stay in the place she considered safe.
The woman wanted to stay with her husband. The husband and wife stayed together according to her wish. The woman stayed with her husband all night and the next day happily went to her relatives’ area. But, three months later, a letter arrived at the LTTE leadership. In it, the woman had written thanking them for treating her husband humanely when she came to meet him. She also said that she was pregnant, but what should I do if my relatives ask how it had happened? If I say my husband and I were together, will the world believe me? Will this give a bad name to my behavior? The letter came saying that she was afraid.
The woman’s letter came to the attention of the national leader, and this problem that a woman has faced is not ordinary. The national leader, who decided to solve this, wrote a letter to the woman again.
The letter said that you, your mother-in-law and the Buddhist priest of your village should come to Kilinochchi on the specified day.
Accordingly, the three who came to Kilinochchi were taken and left with the Sinhala soldier. The Sinhala soldier told his mother and the priest that it was true that they had slept together one night and that the baby growing in his wife’s womb was his. But the people in the village would see and talk about my behavior in a wrong light anyway, the Sinhala woman stood there with tears in her eyes.
The national leader realized that the Sinhala woman’s chastity had been tarnished. He did something that no other army in the world had done. Yes, he released the soldier unconditionally.
The custom of respecting a woman’s tears, chastity, and modesty can only be seen in the Puranaanooru (Old book) songs in Tamil, but the people of the world saw that trait in the national leader.
