This was the first radio of the Tamil Eelam liberation struggle. This radio started its first broadcast on 11.12.1983 from a secret location in the Tanjore district of India. The radio was launched by the Tamil Eelam People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and the radio station was not just a personal radio station for the liberation group but a general radio station for the Tamil Eelam liberation struggle. Firstly, the radio station started broadcasting in Tamil and later it expanded to English and Sinhala.
The LTTE’s Sinhala service for the Sri Lankan Army and the Sinhalese people was later launched under the name “Dethunna”.
