Tamil Research Conference Massacres
The Tamil Research Conference massacres that took place in Yarlpanam on 10 January 1974 were an ugly manifestation of the politics of ethnic hatred. This incident showed that the Sinhalese government would not hesitate to destroy the cultural life of the Tamils. The incident left a permanent scar on the minds of the people of Tamileelam and further intensified the ethnic conflict.
The Sri Lanka Freedom Party government made desperate efforts to prevent the Tamil Research Conference from being held in Yarlpanam; eventually, the Sinhalese police were deployed to disrupt the conference.
In this incident, 9 innocent Tamils were killed. The mastermind of this massacre was the Mayor of Yarlpanam, Alfred Thuraiyappa. Thuraiyappa, who was the main organizer of the Northern Province of the Freedom Party, was a government stooge and was involved in anti-Tamil activities. He betrayed the Tamil extremist youth to the government. He was the one who was responsible for instigating the Sinhala police to the Tamil Research Conference.
Prabhakaran decided to destroy this traitor and teach the Sinhala government a lesson. Meanwhile, Sivakumaran, enraged by the Tamil Research Conference massacres, made heroic attempts to assassinate Alfred Thuraiyappa and Assistant Superintendent of Police Chandrasekhara by bombing them, but they failed. As a result, Sivakumaran, who was being actively sought by the police, met his death on June 5, 1974.
Tamileelam was deeply saddened by the loss of a great freedom fighter with a sense of freedom and amazing courage.
