The 1958 Channithi Murugan Temple Festival – Rare Photographs
These are rare images from the festival events held in 1958 at the Selva Channithi Murugan Temple in Thondaimanaru, Jaffna. Located in the Vadamarachchi region, the Selva Channithi Murugan Temple is one of the most important spiritual and religious sites in Jaffna.
Situated near the Thondaimanaru waterways, this temple is renowned for its unique worship traditions and deep-rooted devotional heritage. Selva Channithi is revered by devotees as the “Kathirkamam of the North” (Vadakkil Kathirkamam) of northern Sri Lanka. The Vel (sacred spear) of Lord Murugan is regarded as the central symbol of worship at this temple.
The special character of this temple lies in its simple devotional practices, which exist outside the traditional Agamic temple system. It has long served as a people’s shrine where devotees from all communities and social backgrounds gather together in worship, beyond caste and social divisions.
Through its traditions of annadanam (free food offerings), devotional vows, annual festivals, and the spiritual experiences of countless devotees, Selva Channithi has earned a unique place among sacred sites.
These photographs, recorded in 1958, are rare historical documents that reveal the temple life, devotional spirit, and community gatherings of the people of Jaffna during that era.
