The first Tamil day the Sky Tigers saw in history.

With the ground force and then navy force the national leader of Tamileelam, V. Prabhakaran creates sky Tigers too. Today is the day where Prabhakaran introduced the Sky Tigers as the Third Brigade. Today is the day that Tamileelam Sky Tigers successfully carried out the first sky strike on the Sinhala air base Katunayake at 1.45 am!

The Tamileelam Sky Tigers (TST) is an air force unit of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). This is also called as Air Tigers, Flying Tigers, and Sky Tigers. The LTTE confirmed its presence to the world outside by attacking the Katunayake Air Force Base in Colombo on March 26, 2007. The air force pilots will be wearing a light blue leopard uniform and a logo with the words ‘Vanodi’ on it. Already around the year of 85-86 the LTTE began to focus on building aircraft.

September 27, 1998 – During the Heroes’ Day speech, the national leader of Tamileelam, V. Prabhakaran made the first official announcement of the Sky Tigers Brigade. Eyewitness tells of flowers being sprinkled from an airplane belonging to the LTTE during the event of announcement.

“Year 2000 – “: LTTE announces it as “Sky Tiger Year”

Vathilingam Sornalingam, also known as Colonel Shankar, led the LTTE Sky Tigers. He served as LTTE leader until his death in December 2001. January 26, 2005 – Sri Lankan military report on Iranamadu airstrike. August 11, 2006 – Reports have surfaced that the Palaly Air Force Base in Jaffna (owned by the Sri Lankan Army) may have been attacked by LTTE airstrikes.

March 26, 2007: The LTTE claimed officially that the first attack launched by the Sky Tigers was on the  Sri-Lankan Katunayake Air force Base. April 24, 2007: Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) planes launch a successful attack on a military base in Palaly. April 29, 2007: Two LTTE airstrikes bomb Kolonnawa oil rigs 3 miles north of Colombo and Kerawalapitiya oil rigs 10 miles away. October 22, 2007 – Ellalan Operation 2007: Early morning sky force and ground force attack on the Anuradhapura Air Force Base. They destroys 8 aircraft and kills 13 soldiers. Based on the LTTE attack news published information and photos and it says that the LTTE has 2-5 light aircraft.

The Sri Lankan government considers these to be Czech Z-143 aircraft. Apart from these, the LTTE may have other aircraft and helicopters that can be used for attacks. These show that the LTTE has the technical resources for aircraft. Of the 4 bombs dropped on Katunayake airport, 1 did not explode. Sri Lankan military said to the Sunday Times newspaper, they have had examined several unexploded ordnance and found that hundreds of these cylinders were locally made.

The ability to drive a plane through the night and destroy a target is not an easily obtainable performance. On the contrary, it requires long-term study and workshop. The LTTE’s capability was demonstrated in the aftermath of the airstrikes. Initially, it was reported by military analysts that the LTTE could only carry out suicide attacks like the Japanese Kamikaze. But all the successfully sky force attacks proved the Sri Lankan military was wrong!

Given the cost of purchasing an aircraft and the difficulty of training as a pilot, it has been suggested that suicide attacks may be the last resort.

It is thought that the LTTE may be involved in a series of blitzkrieg attacks in the future.
Colonel Shankar, who is considered to be the leader in the origins of the Sky Tigers, said, “I did my B.E. in Aeronautics at the Hindustan College of Engineering in Chennai.” He then went to Canada, where he worked in the engineering department at Air Canada.

Leading military analyst Iqbal Adas has suggested that the LTTE may have had driving training in France and the United Kingdom. Newspapers like “The Island” and “Asia Tribune” say LTTE should have had lessons in technology in Malaysia.
