The LTTE fighters led by Major Selvarasa Master

The LTTE fighters led by Major Selvarasa Master who blocked the Indian troops who tried to advance and defeated them.

In the late afternoon of October 1987, Selvarasa Master, one of the leading commanders of the LTTE, was leaving Kokkuvil, Yarlpanam for Manippay to meet a commander. When he received information that the Indian army was advancing from Kokkuvil towards Anaikottai, he immediately returned and, with limited resources, organized a small force of fighters and launched a massive counterattack against the advancing Indian troops at the Kokkuvil Kulapitti junction. The fighting, which began at ten o’clock in the morning, lasted for about an hour. More than twelve Indian soldiers were killed in this successful attack. Many weapons were also captured. The first weapon to be captured in this attack was a launcher called a pazooka. After this attack, the Indian army remained in its positions for two weeks without making any progress. A small team of fifteen fighters participated in this attack.

At the time of this attack, Indian and French journalists were also in Yarlpanam and were brought to the scene of the fighting by the LTTE fighters. The photographs taken by these journalists are attached herewith. It was through their news that the outside world was informed about what the Indian army, which had come to keep the peace in Sri Lanka, was doing.

This is one of the battles that created the confidence among the fighters that they could fight against the fourth superpower of the world. The credit for uniting the ranks within a short time and stopping the massive advance of the Indian forces with a single attack. That too with a small number of fighters. Leading the ranks in a straight line goes to Selvarasa Master. This is one of the battles that revealed Selvarasa Master´s war strategy and leadership skills. The LTTE suffered no losses in this successful attack.

The credit for raising many fighters for the Tamileelam struggle after Lt. Col. Ponnaman also goes to Selvarasa Master.
