The Memorial Stupa of Thileepan in Nallur, Jaffna

The Memorial Stupa of Thileepan in Nallur, Jaffna

Those who travel to Nallur, the heart of Jaffna, and move along its streets will certainly have passed this blue-coloured memorial stupa.

Surrounded by colourful flags and standing against the lively background of famous ice cream shops, this stupa is not merely a stone structure. It stands as a historical witness carrying the deep wounds and profound sacrifices found in the history of Eelam Tamils.

The moment Jaffna lovers see this image, they immediately remember the memorial stupa standing majestically near the famous Nallur Kandaswamy Temple.

This monument was built in memory of Thileepan, who, during the history of the Eelam struggle, undertook a hunger strike without consuming even a drop of water for 12 days and passed away at the age of 23.

What makes this stupa special?

Hands raised in prayer

At the top of the stupa, two hands rising towards the sky represent the traditional Tamil symbol of respect and worship—the Anjali gesture (hands joined in prayer).

These hands symbolise the peaceful path of protest followed by Thileepan until his final breath, as well as his unwavering love and concern for his people.

A gathering place for the people

Every year, when September arrives, the streets of Nallur become filled with memories of Thileepan. Thousands of people gather and traditionally light lamps and pay their respects in front of this memorial.

The stupa was damaged during the conflict in the 1990s, but it was later rebuilt at the same location through the collective efforts of the people.

A place where history and the present meet

The most striking contrast of this place is that history and everyday life exist side by side.

On one side stands a memorial dedicated to a person who sacrificed his own life for the rights of his people.

On the other side, during the evenings, families and friends gather, laugh together, and enjoy ice cream in a lively and peaceful atmosphere.

This stupa reminds us of one thing:

“Behind the peaceful moments we experience today, there are the great sacrifices made by someone yesterday.”

The next time you visit Nallur in Jaffna, take a moment to look closely at this memorial. There, you will not see only architecture—you will see the history of a people and a dedication that time cannot erase.
