The Tamil Eelam national flag came into use in 1990 as a means for Eelam Tamils

The Tamil Eelam national flag came into use in 1990 as a means for Eelam Tamils living around the world to express their distinct national identity.

Today, Eelam Tamils who live as diaspora communities across the world raise their homeland flag—the Tamil Eelam national flag—during every major event in the countries where they live, in order to express that they are a distinct national community with Tamil Eelam as their homeland.

It has been portrayed by the Sri Lankan Sinhala side, with the help of a third party, as if this were the flag of the LTTE. It should be noted that not only the Sinhala side but also other forces are behind this, and Tamils should act with awareness of this situation.

The Tamil Eelam national flag is the distinct national symbol of the Eelam Tamil people. Every Tamil has a duty and responsibility to protect it and must not forget this.

#Note: The Tamil Eelam national flag and the LTTE flag are not the same. The organization’s flag was used from 1977 until the end of the war in 2009 (and it included lettering). However, the Tamil Eelam national flag does not contain such lettering. Since 1990, it has been used by Eelam Tamils worldwide as a national flag expressing their identity.
