Thileepan Free Medical Service

Who knows why the national leader, Prabhakaran started Thileepan Free Medical Service for the people?

It was in the beginning of 1998. It was a time of ongoing war in Tamileelam. People do not have transport facilities. An ambulance cannot be called for an emergency. It was a time when there were no telephone facilities and no hospitals in the villages. The shortage of doctors is on the other hand. It was a time when people from the villages came to the hospitals to meet their urgent needs in cattle carts or with the help of nearby camp freedom fighters.

At that time the national leader Prabhakaran and his wife and children lived in Ramanathapuram, Kilinochchi. Balachandran, the national leader’s third son, was then two years old. Once a month the national leader Prabhakaran would visit his son.
Once while the national leader was staying at his wife´ home in Ramanathapuram, a large type of scorpion bit Balachandran at night. That type of scorpion is very deadly. The national leader’s wife and security guards immediately took him to the doctor, Padmalosini.

At that time the national leader stayed at home with his other kids Thuvaraka and Charles Antony. No one slept that night. Even the national leader. Security guards and everyone in the house were tense as the two-year-old was bitten by a dangerous scorpian. But Thuvaraka has been making tea and laughing at security guards without any hesitation about what will happen to her brother. Observing this, the national leader called his daughter Thuvaraka and asked her if she was not worried about the condition of her brother who was bitten by a scorpion.

She said: “Father, You all got upset and immediately sent brother to the hospital with mother. But the pregnant moms in this town and whoever bitten by snake, they cannot go to the hospital immediately. There are no hospitals nearby. The national leader then asked Thuvaraka what he could do for the people in the villages ? Thuvaraka said, “Can’t our medical freedom fighters brothers serve the people of every town? The national leader promised Thuvaraka to make arrangements for it tomorrow and went to bed.

Accordingly, with the help of the national leader Prabhakaran´s daughter Thuvaraka, the Thileepan Memorial Hospitals were set up in the villages of Tamileelam where there were no hospitals. They also got ambulance services.

Another important point was that during the ceasefire period, the Sri Lankan Army visited the Thileepan Hospitals to meet the medical needs of the wounded armies. They know the Tigers will not betray by changing drugs even if they are enemies!
