TOWARDS OUR PLACES – Kanakapuram

Kanakapuram is a beautiful town under Karaichi Divisional Secretariat in Kilinochchi District.

The aim of the people of Kanakapuram is to stop the Sinhalese immigration and to protect the homeland belonging to the Tamils, to establish an immigration program for educated youth, to provide appropriate help & encouragement to those youths to live in the socio-economic fields and to bring about social progress and economic development.

Under the guidance of Yogar Swami, together with the native Tamil people of Kanakapuram and the Tamil community from Jaffna, the residents cleared the forests of Kanakapuram and started living together with the native Tamil people there.

Yogar Swami’s connection lies in Kilinochchi with the establishment of Kanakambikaikulam of Kanakapuram.  Kanakapuram Educated Youth Project Upland Settlement Program was started on the 22nd of August in 1958. Kanakapuram is a village about 7 km long, Kanakapuram Karunakarapillaiyar Temple and Juda Temple are also found in Kanakapuram Sports Club.  Kilinochchi is the most popular sports club in the district.  Even though there were many economically prosperous industries here such as upland cultivation and animal farming, due to urbanization, agricultural lands are becoming shops and buildings.

Kanakapuram Maveerar Thuilumillam (Tamil Hero’s Memorial Monument) is still worshiped and paid homage to the Tamil National heroes.
