TOWARDS OUR PLACES – Ramanathapuram

Ramanathapuram is a beautiful place located in the Karachi Divisional Secretariat in Kilinochchi District. Vaddakachchi, Kalmadu, Puthukadu, Alagapuri, Mayavanoor is located around Ramanathapuram. Every small villages has its own famous things. These villages have beautiful fields and palms. The water from Iranaimadu spreads itself into small beautiful ponds.  

Although it is in the government documents as a settlement village in 1948, there are no official documents related to the ancient heritage of the villages. Kandavalai, which is close to, is seen to be a village with stories from royal families at that time. The village is bordering the village of Ambagamam, which is closely related to the Bandaravannian in the Vanni. Ancient historical records have been hidden from here. In 1948 many people from Jaffna area came to Ramanathapuram to work in the fields.  They received two acres of land and three acres of farmland and settled them in Ramanathapuram. The main politician in this area was a man named Ramanthan, and the history said the name of the village was given after him.

The Vayalur Murugan Temple, which is said to have been built by the Hindu priests, is also found here. The history about this temple was saying by people to people only.

The region is a multi-national city with a wealth of education and a large number of graduates and professionals. It also has award-winning schools.

“Kooththu” is a popular street theatre/drama in the story of Tamils. Kuttavarayan Kooththu, Bandaravanian Kooththu, Valli Thirumanam Kooththu is one of the most popular “Kooththu” in the village. Special temple arrangement also takes place here. It starts from Aiyanar Temple and ends at Amman Temple. The arrangement is filled with music and drama and last from morning to late night.

Ramanathapuram village has consciously made its sacrificing to the homeland. Many freedom fighters from this village has been martyrs during the war.

The following temples are an expression of the spiritual devotion of the people of the area:

  • Arulmigu Vayalur Murugan Temple
  • Soosaiyappar Church
  • Arulmigu Puthukaadu Iyanar Temple.

All the inhabitants of the area are interested in learning and knowledge. Three government schools are located in Ramanathapuram to develop people’s knowledge by their wish.
