Trouble in the talks and the Tamieelam-Sri Lankan war
Following the withdrawal of the Indian army, trouble arose in the Colombo talks. There was a change in the course and approach of the Premadasa government. With the end of Indian colonialism and the destruction of the JVP movement, the arrogant Premadasa government tried to ignore the Tamil issue without offering any substantive solution. The government also ignored the LTTE’s demand to remove the Sixth Amendment to the Constitution, which prohibited the Tamils’ right to self-determination. At the same time, pressure was also exerted on the LTTE to surrender its weapons as a precondition for any solution. This led to a conflict between the government and the LTTE.
The Sinhalese armed forces, which had killed more than fifty thousand innocent Sinhalese youth under the guise of the JVP movement, were arrogant enough to destroy the LTTE as well. The Sinhalese army, which was paralyzed in its camps in Tamileelam, could not tolerate the majestic march of the LTTE and the Tamileelam flags flying everywhere. The atrocities of the Sinhalese police in the east and the violations of the army in the north developed into conflicts and eventually erupted into war.
The new decade of the nineties began with a full-scale war that had erupted into a major conflict unprecedented in history between the Tamil and Sinhalese nations.
We have seen the history of the past two decades, which consisted of many historical turning points and epochal events, intertwine with the gradual development, uprising and struggle of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. In this historical flow, the LTTE not only developed into a revolutionary form of the Tamils’ independence uprising but also led the liberation struggle forward on a decisive path.
The LTTE movement has made great achievements in its efforts to reclaim our homeland, which is the foundation of our national life and the foundation of our independent state. As a result of continuous, courageous and heroic struggle, today a large part of the territory of Tamileelam has been reclaimed by the LTTE. The fact that these areas, which were occupied by the Indian armies for a long time, have now been converted into administratively controlled areas of the Tamils should be considered a major advance in our struggle.
Through Prabhakaran’s own efforts and efficiency, a strong liberation army has been formed as the bulwark of security for the people of Tamileelam. The establishment of a Tamil army that is proficient in traditional methods of warfare marks a major turning point towards development in the history of our struggle.
The struggle of the LTTE, full of amazing sacrifices and dedication, has instilled an unprecedented sense of patriotism and a love of freedom among the Tamils. The achievement of uniting the vast masses of the people beyond caste, class and regional differences in a single ideal and building them into a single national force also belongs to the LTTE.
Today, our struggle has attracted the attention of the world as the foremost national liberation struggle in the South Asian continent. The LTTE’s struggle for autonomy, which is unparalleled in fighting ability, ideal determination and sacrificial thinking, has become a driving force and guide for the liberation struggles of the oppressed people of the world.
The emergence of the Liberation Army of Tamileelam, the great achievements it has achieved in the homeland liberation war, and the heavy losses faced by the enemy army have instilled an unprecedented confidence in the LTTE movement among the people of Tamileelam. The people have come to believe that the LTTE, who will be the historical creators of this new decade, will establish the right to autonomy in the Tamil homeland and achieve their sacred ideal.
