JVP. Black flag shouting, chaos, debate. The meeting adjourned: Heated verbal argument among MPs over the General Work document. JVP. Amidst the shouting, chaos, and black flag protests of MPs, the General Work for Tsunami Relief was presented in Parliament yesterday morning.
As the JVP. MPs continued to disrupt the proceedings of the meeting and created a huge ruckus, Speaker Lokku Bandara adjourned the meeting proceedings until the 5th of next month without holding a debate on the General Work.
Parliament met at 9.30 a.m. yesterday under the chairmanship of Speaker V.J.M. Lokku Bandara. As usual, after the question time for MPs ended, Minister Maithripala Sirisena rose to deliver a special speech on the Common Work Document at 9.45 am. At that time, JVP’s Publicity Secretary and Colombo District MP Wimal Weerawansa raised a point of order.
He raised his point of order by questioning why the Common Work Document should be submitted to the meeting and discussed when both the government and the LTTE had signed it.
When Minister Maithripala Sirisena tried to respond, the JVP MPs, who did not accept it, took out the black flags they had hidden under their desks and stood in the middle of the meeting hall, holding them in their hands and shouting. They chanted, “We will tear down the common structure that creates the Tamil kingdom.” Amidst the chaos, JVP MPs were shouting slogans against the national leader, Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), while Minister Maithripala Sirisena delivered the government’s explanatory statement on the common structure.
However, JVP MPs stood near Minister Maithripala Sirisena’s loudspeaker and shouted at him to stop him from speaking, asking him if he had made a deal with the LTTE terrorists. The Speaker asked JVP to behave in a civilized manner in the meeting. The meeting shook due to the shouting and chaos. Unable to control it, the Speaker adjourned the meeting for ten minutes at around 9.47.
Verbal argument among MPs
Even after the meeting was adjourned, JVP MPs stood in the middle of the meeting hall and shouted. They insulted the national leader and the LTTE with inappropriate words.
Minister Milroy Fernando and Deputy Minister Mahindananda Aluthgame had a verbal argument with JVP MPs. Inappropriate words were also exchanged.

Meanwhile, the Tamil National Alliance MPs stood up from their seats and shouted, “Long live Tamileelam” amidst the slogans of the JVP.
The alliance’s Mattacalappu district MPs S. Jayananda Moorthy, Kanakasabai, Amparai district MP. Pathmanathan, and Yarlpanam district MPs Padmini Chidambaranathan and Sivanesan shouted in a way that infuriated the JVP MPs. The alliance’s parliamentary committee chairman I. Sampanthan waved his hand and ordered the above MPs to remain quiet.

The meeting reconvened at 10.18. Minister Maithripala Sirisena rose to speak again. At that time, the JVP prevented him from speaking. The Speaker said to be quiet. The JVP members shouted that they would not remain quiet until the general structure was torn down. They also raised questions and shouted.

Meanwhile, the Speaker called on Minister Maithripala Sirisena to submit the general structure. Amidst the uproar, the Minister told the Speaker that he could not explain the general structure document and read its contents.
At that time, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party MPs provided security to the Minister. Ministers T.M. Iyerathna, Milroy Fernando, Jayaraj, Fernando Pulle, and Deputy Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage surrounded Minister Maithripala Sirisena so that the JVP MPs could not get close.
At that time, the Minister, who adjusted the microphone, announced that he would submit the General Structure Document to this meeting. At that time, the JVP MPs and the above-mentioned Ministers were dragged against each other. In the meantime, the Speaker announced that the meeting accepted the submission of the General Structure Document.
