Vellaiya Thevan or Bahadur

Vellaiya Thevan or Bahadur (an honorific title that means “valiant warrior”) Vellai was one of the most valiant generals of Polygar Veerapandiya Kattabomman.

On the eventful day of September 20, 1798 when Kattabomman met the British Empire’s tax collector; Jackson. Jackson tried to imprison Kattabomman, and on that faithful day, as Kattabomman evaded capture from Jackson, among his entourage present was Vellaiya Thevan.

On September 5, 1799 morning, Major Bannerman launched a vicious attack in an attempt to besieged the fort of panchalakurichi. Defending the fort from the occupying British empire forces was it’s commander in charge, Vellaiya Thevan.

General Collins in an attempt to outflank the defense, attempted to break through the southern gate and was stabbed & killed by Vellaiya Thevan, Kattabomman and others evaded capture & departed at nightfall as the repaired fort was considered no longer safe.

It was then announced by the occupying British empire, that anyone who supply information leading to the capture Commander Vellaiya Thevan in connection to the death of General Collins will be rewarded 1000 silver coins.

Vellaiya Thevan’s father-in-law in favour of that small reward, decided to betray his son-in-law & handed him over to the occupying British empire.
