On 14th of 2nd month, 1987, a bowser truck carrying drinking

On 14th of 2nd month, 1987, a bowser truck carrying drinking water to the army, exploded due to an engineering error. This attack was prepared by the LTTE with the intention of attacking and destroying the camp in Savagacheri area of Jaffna district.

Following became maveerar in this tragic event:

  • Yogaratnam Gugan, alias Athputhan or Ponnamman, who conducted ten training camps of the Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam and made a thousand LTTE members.
  • Mahalingam Thileepan alias Kedeels, the chief commander of the Thenmaradchi region of Jaffna district, trained in the first training camp of the Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam.
  • Vasu alias Uruthirapathi Suthakar, who trained in the second training camp of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and served as the in-charge of the Technical Division of the Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam.
  • Also Vaithyalingam Vashikaran alias Siddharthan, Kirutnar Aruchunan alias Paran, Sundaram Thanapalasingham alias Yoges, Thambipillai Vasantakumar alias Devan, Kanthaiya Mohanalingam alias Kumanan, Arulambalam Yoganathan alias Akbar, Kathirgamu Nakulesvaran alias Kavar.

We pay our respects to the martyrdom of these LTTE fighters.

After Pandithar´s death, Sathasivam Krishnakumar alias Kiddu, who made Jaffna under the complete control of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) – On the basis of the intelligence gathered by their fighters about the Navakuli force camp, Kedlees, who was in charge of Thenmaradchi while he was in the field as the Jaffna district commander, in coordination with Ponnamman, who had successfully completed training courses in India and returned to Eelam, planned to attack and destroy the Navakuli Army Camp in a very secret manner.

Based on the information, Andreis Company was supplying drinking water to the Sri Lankan army through a common man to Navakuli Army Camp. In that way, it is usual for the common man to carry water to the camp by bowser once a day. The common man was also paid by the Andreis Company to drive the bowser and supply water to the army in the camp. Although the LTTE knew about this, they did not give any hindrance to the operation.

Therefore, to make it favorable for this attack, a bowser vehicle was prepared like that original bowser vehicle. The bowser was made like a regular bowser and that bowser was divided into two parts, under the supervision of senior commander Ponnamman, with the help of Ponnamman’s relative, engineer Ranjan, an ordinary common man who was not in the LTTE and Ponnamman’s cousin.

The same driver who used to drive the bowser vehicle that was prepared in this way was selected to drive the Navakuli camp and the attack plan was planned by the LTTE so that the driver would escape. When the LTTE informed him about this attack, he told the LTTE that “If anything goes wrong, don’t think about me and blow it up.” It shows how much the common Tamil people loved the LTTE.

About an hour before the attack, while filling the bowser with water to carry it to the attack, an engineer named Sivanenthiran alias Ranjan and 10 LTTE freedom fighters including the driver who was to drive the bowser vehicle died in this tragical accident.

We offer our deepest condolences to them.
