“What does a failed society look like?”
When asked this question, the famous Russian writer Anton Chekhov explained it this way: In failed societies, there will be a thousand fools in the arena for every person who thinks rationally.
For every word spoken with thoughtfulness and compassion, a thousand words—extreme and foolish—will be uttered in response. There, the majority will be formed precisely by foolishness.
Any society in which trivial matters are turned into major headlines, while all sensible thoughts are dismissed as exaggerations; any society in which its public sphere is occupied by the insignificant and the petty—
that is a failed society.
