Fallen freedom fighters and their uprising after the death – “Thuyilum Illam”

“All the elements of the liberation of Tamil Eelam were built on a strong foundation and there is a deep vision and a long and decisive framework for it,” said the Tamil Eelam National Leader, Prabhakaran in an article by Nehru Gunaratnam, a senior political analyst in Canada.

As his article goes on to say, “Be proud to share this history with everyone. They are pre-recorded with prophecy. I am very happy to bring this post, which was released on Heroes’ Day 2005, in today’s context.

The heroic legacy that was lost in the heroic history of Tamils was reborn. Breaking the silence of slavery, a storm arose. The slender Tamil rose up the hill and straightened up. Tamil Eelam, which had been asleep for a long time, was awakened by the bondage of animals. He said that those who are the breath of this national uprising are our heroes. The decision of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) to bury the remains of their heroes undermined the ancient history of our nation. We do not use the word burying, we use the word sowing and the word sowing for the body. The freedom fighters will rise again, and sowing is used in the sense that they are not mortal.

In the early days of the liberation war, the bodies of the LTTE cadres were characterized by both burial and cremation. In accordance with the religious beliefs and wishes of the parents, the remains of the freedom fighters were cremated and buried. The remains of the freedom fighters were then cremated in public cemeteries. During the struggle, the LTTE was forced to bury its remains. During the war with the Indian occupation army, the national leader and his LTTE troops were stationed in the sand dunes. Scattered spores were buried in the jungles for the reason that if the field soldiers were cremated, the Indian Army would find the direction of the smoke and the LTTE hideouts. The world has a tradition of retrieving the remains of soldiers abandoned or buried in battlefields after a favorable situation has arisen. The LTTE has etablished the phrase ‘Thuyilum Illam’.

“Thuyilum Illam” – The seeds of the tigers are sown here without any distinction between male and female. The phrase conveys the LTTE’s notion of a hero. The first “Thuyilum Illam” was started in Koppay. In the early days of Koppay “Thuyilum Illam” soil, the remains of the freedom fighters were buried and burnt.

In 1991 it was decided that the body would not be burned but would be buried. The 1991 issue of October – November Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) magazine said that in the homes of the heroes set up for cremation, the heroes are now buried and their graves are kept here. It will forever remain on our soil as a symbol of sacrifice. It said the decision was in line with the wishes of the vast majority of the freedom fighters. After the decision was made to bury the seeds, the first seeds were sown on July 14th 1991 of Captain Solay in Koppay “Thuyilum Illam”.

We, the Tigers, have a habit of looking for memories when the body are not available. At the same time it is our custom to place the body in one “Thuyilum Illam” and a memorial stone in another “Thuyilum Illam”. The seeds of many South Tamil heroes have been planted at Visuvamadu Maveerar Thuyilum Illam and Mulliyavalai Thuyilum Illam. Their memorials have been installed in the homes of South Tamil Eelam.

The remains of Colonel Nathan and Captain Gajan are laid to rest at the Paris Public Cemetery. Memorials to them were raised at the Visuvamadu Thuyilum Illam.

The number of our “Thuyilum Illam” is 25. The total number of stones and memorials of the fallen freedom fighters is 20000. (2005 Heroes’ Day details.) Next we will the programs for a funeral of a LTTE hero.

Once the body of the field hero is available, it is brought to the land. The uniform is worn over the body. At the same time the details of the fallen fighter are confirmed and he is given the rank. The seed is then placed in an ark. The name and rank of the hero are engraved on the ark. The ark containing the body is brought home, with LTTE honors, by the district LTTE members, to the recipient or relative. After the home worship is over, the body is taken to a public hall or fighters´ hall for the “Veeravengai” – Hero event. After that, the Veeravangai funeral is held in the hall. At first lightning the general flame. Next, the garland is then garlanded for the body. Priority is given to the wife, husband and children. A similar procedure is followed for the memorial event. The picture of the hero at the memorial event is given to the owner after the body is taken to “Thuyilum Illam”. The garland is applied to the body, after which the inflorescence is infused. Memoirs are performed next.

Finally the body is taken to “Thuyilum Illam” with LTTE honors. Flower worship is done there. The ark, which is then placed on a special pedestal, is carried to the platform and placed there. The oath will be read. After the oath is read, the LTTE honors is resolved. After the national song will be played, and after everyone takes  little sand and puts on the body/coffins.

November 27, which is celebrated as Heroes’ Day by Eelam Tamils, took place at first time in the Tamil Eelam Liberation War in memory of Shankar (Satyanathan) in 1989. Since November 27, 1989, we have been observing Heroes’ Day every year. The first is the heroism of the hero, which is of great significance as it is celebrated as the day of all heroes. There is a special hero day which is the biggest event of Tamil Eelam. From 1990 to 1994, a week from November 21st to 27th was marked as Heroes’ Week. Since 1995, November 25, 26 and 27 have been observed as Heroes’ Uprising Days. The national leader will start the day with Heroes’ Day Speech at 6.05 pm. It was the time of the first LTTE freedom fighter became hero, Shankar.

And after the hero´s speech all the church bells will be rung for one minute anywhere in Tamil Eelam. After that there will be a little silence time in honor of the fallen fighters. The flame will be lit by the in front of each tomb and tombstone in the homes of the heroes. The main flywheel will be mounted in the middle of the house. During the Heroes “Day, the Heroes…” song sung for that day will be played in the homes. It first sounded in 1991 at the Koppay Thuyilum Illam. This song was written by the poet Puthuvai Rathinathurai.
